Self-Worth Defending Classes

One of the key projects of the BSA is the development of the Bonobo Sisterhood Self-Worth Defending Classes. We will team up with local self-defense providers and offer the Bonobo Sisterhood as the context for a focus on self-worth-defending.

Just as a rising tide lifts all boats, when we learn self-defense, we learn from the outside-in and the inside-out that we do have selves worth defending.

A group called “We Are Worth Defending” recently graduated its first All-Black Certified Empowerment Self-Defense Instructor Cohort, and gave The Bonobo Sisterhood Award to two of its founders.

Early steps

At Harvard Law School, in partnership with the Title IX Office and IMPACT Boston, we have held classes for two consecutive years. The classes are preceded by a lecture and discussion by Diane Rosenfeld about the Bonobo Sisterhood.

Testimonials

Alice C, Self-Worth Defending Class Participant, 2024

“ Thank you all so much for putting together such a fabulous program! It was eye-opening to hear about the concept of the Bonobo Sisterhood and how bonobos eliminated male sexual coercion by looking out for and helping each other.

The Impact instructors were absolutely amazing. It was also inspiring to see fellow participants gaining confidence and cheering for each other during the workshop. I walked out of the workshop yesterday feeling more self-assured and empowered that I would know how to defend myself in the future.”
